A Collection

In the infancy of telephony the use of the telephone was a private matter which took place indoors. It was for important messages and not for chitchat. A lot has changed since then - not only on the technical side, but also what concerns the actual use of the telephone.

In late summer 2003, Post & Tele Museum went out in town to substantiate the mobile telephone users of today. The intention was to throw light on the demeanour of the users in writing and pictures.  

During the first 6 months of 2003 there were 4.5 million mobile telephone subscribers and og prepaid cell phone card users in Denmark. It is a small selection of these that the museum is presenting on the Balcony and in the Café. 

With assistance from photographer Sara Skytte  we have captured all the well-known situations from our everyday life, and the callers are all there: the giggling young girls, the tough guys, the patrons, the businessmen, the families with small children, the reckless cyclists, and the elegant ladies.  

The Mobile is Loose 

Everything around us has gradually been made more efficient, so has our everyday life and communication. We want to be able to get hold of one another at any time. In this way our understanding of important messages have changed, too, and it has become natural just to call and say that you will be five minutes late.

The telephone has broken its constricting wire and has been let loose in public space.
