A Pioneer
Valdemar Andersen (1875-1928) was an all-round artist: Illustrator, painter, ceramicist, and poster designer. He worked innovatively within the genres and was among the first in Denmark to make pos-ters an art form. His special talents brought him in contact with many collaborators in the Danish cul-tural life and business world, including the Post & Telegraph Service. In 1912, Valdemar Andersen designed the Christmas seal featuring the new royal couple, King Christian the 10th and Queen Alexandrine, in 1914 he designed the Christmas seal of the year in collaboration with W. Glud, and he was behind the stamp edition on the occasion of the reunion of North Slesvig with Denmark in 1920. The four huge paintings in the café are from an embellishment assigned by the Post & Telegraph Service in 1926. They are painted in water colour on canvas and are each measuring no less than 108 x 183 cm including the frame.
Pictorial Narrative
The series of totally eight pictures describes the course of a letter from sender to recipient. The orna-mental purpose of the series are emphasized by the chain of golden dots surrounding the motifs. The pictures are an example of the special style which contributed to make Valdemar Andersen a pioneer in the Danish history of art.
The paintings by Valdemar Andersen can be seen in the museum café from 3rd January to 5th Febru-ary 2006.
