How many cows does an e-mail pollute, mum?

On a worldwide scale IT and communication account for as much CO2 emission as the aviation industry: 2 % of the total annual emission of 27 billion tons. And in our pockets we are carrying time bombs in the shape of mobile phones filled with heavy metals and chemicals. The Danish Post & Tele Museum's new travelling exhibition presents surprising points and scary examples of the effects of our modern life style: The weight of digital communication.

In the new travelling exhibition the focus is on communication and climate. The examples are many and span from historical environmental scandals in the name of communication to the latest studies of what consequences e-mails and the internet revolution have to the climate. The figures uncover a thought-provoking dilemma - i.e. that digital communication may cost, but can also reduce CO2 emission e.g. by replacing transport. It costs for example the same in CO2 to send 20,000 text messages as to drive 1 km by car!

The exhibition is also focusing on the more tangible environmental impacts of our desire to be permanently online: e-waste. It would for instance be possible to recycle 2.5 tons lead, 35 tons copper, and 32 kilos gold if all Danes handed in their used mobile telephones at the recycling centres.

The exhibition texts strike a light and humorous note when distinguishing between facts, myths, and fiction. Visitors are encouraged to sharpen their critical sense of proportions towards a subject which has become strongly politicized.

Through the 6 themes of the exhibition the climate and environment problematic is presented in a popular and entertaining way; from the black conscience of the past to the present dilemmas and the hope of a green IT- future.

The entire exhibition measures 44.9 metres in length, distributed on 80 banners. It is possible to adapt the walls/the size and language of the banners according to requirement. Evocative sound effects may be included.

Exhibition walls, banners, and possible sound effects will be delivered by Post & Tele Museum. Transport costs are to be paid by the borrower. If the borrower wishes to print the exhibition banners in other languages, other formats etc., all printing expenses will be for the borrower's own account.
